Spatial Genetic Patterns in Four Old-Growth Populations of Coast Redwood
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction The mating systems of plant species and their patterns of pollen flow and seed dispersal create a pattern in the distribution of genetic diversity which is referred to as spatial genetic structure (Wright 1946). Over time, that pattern may be modified by other influences such as natural selection. In studying the spatial genetic structures of plant species directly, we can infer the past events of gene flow that contributed to those structures. Elucidating the dynamics of gene flow within a species improves our understanding of the nature of local populations—the units within which the majority of gene sharing occurs, and the units that are often the focus of conservation or management.

Regeneration Dynamics of Coast Redwood, a Sprouting Conifer Species: A Review with Implications for Management and Restoration
Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens (Lamb. ex. D. Don) Endl.) is unique among conifer species because of its longevity, the great sizes of individual trees, and its propensity to reproduce through sprouts. Timber harvesting in the native redwood range along the coast of the western United States has necessitated restoration aimed to promote old forest structures to increase the total amount of ...
متن کاملClonal Spread in Second-Growth Stands of Coast Redwood, Sequoia sempervirens1
Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is one of the rare conifers to reproduce successfully through clonal spread. The importance of this mode of reproduction in stand development is largely unknown. Understanding the importance of clonal spread and the spatial structure of clones is crucial for stand management strategies that would aim to maximize genetic diversity. We have developed genetic m...
متن کاملStructure and Dynamics of an Upland Old- Growth Forest at Redwood National Park, California
Many current redwood forest management targets are based on old-growth conditions, so it is critical that we understand the variability and range of conditions that constitute these forests. Here we present information on the structure and dynamics from six one-hectare forest monitoring plots in an upland old-growth forest at Redwood National Park, California. We surveyed all stems ≥20 cm DBH i...
متن کاملIncidence, size and spatial structure of clones in second-growth stands of coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens (Cupressaceae).
The ecology and evolutionary potential of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is significantly influenced by the important role clonal spread plays in its reproduction and site persistence. In nine second-growth stands, amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) were used to identify redwood clonal architecture. Clones (multistem genets) dominated sites by representing an average of 70% o...
متن کاملRelationship of Marbled Murrelets with Habitat Characteristics in Redwood Forests in Northwestern California
We compared the relationships of Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) behavior with habitat and landscape characteristics in isolated old-growth and residual redwood forest stands from 2 to 400 ha in Redwood National and State parks. In isolated stands we found both higher murrelet detection levels a nd what we consider breeding behavior in stands with higher overall tree crown cover and...
